Rotary Shares Message to Clubs
I want you all to know that it is truly an honor to take on the role of the District Governor of Rotary International District 7790. I thank everyone for the privilege to serve the district in that capacity. I am striving to be worthy of your trust.
In case you didn’t hear about a certain aspect of this year’s PETS, I would like to relate it to you. I gave each President-elect a Woodruff Key and asked them to carry it with them daily. Now why in the world would I do that, you may ask. I did that to give them a daily reminder of their responsibility as Club President to be the driving force behind their respective clubs. If you look at the Rotary Wheel, you will see a keyway or slot in the center of the wheel. To make this wheel turn or work, you must insert the Woodruff Key. In their case they must be the Woodruff Key for their club. In a similar fashion the 2007-08 theme Rotary Shares will act as a daily reminder of what ordinary people such as you and I and your Presidents-elect can accomplish through being the Woodruff Key for your clubs and doing the extraordinary work of Rotary.
RI President Wilf Wilkinson said the following to the 532 District Governors-elect at the 2007 International Assembly in San Diego in February, “What makes Rotary great is our expressing the love in our hearts through the work of our hands and our minds. As Rotarians, we don’t just sit back and talk about loving other human beings. As Rotarians, we demonstrate that love, and we share that love, through helping each other.” Almost everything Rotary does involves sharing. We share our time, we share our talents, and we share our resources with others who need our help.
President Wilf further said, “In Rotary, sharing doesn’t mean giving away what we have to spare, what we don’t need ourselves. Sharing means giving of ourselves, selflessly, for the good of others.” More than just a theme, Rotary Shares is a call to action. President Wilf challenged us in San Diego to share our leadership, our talents, and our dedication to make our clubs and our district stronger.
I want you all to say yes to attending the 2008 District Conference in Bar Harbor on May 16, 17 & 18. The fine weather has been ordered and a festive Friday evening is being planned complete with lobster dinner or other delicacies of your choice. A gala Governor’s Ball on Saturday evening will culminate the weekend.
First, however, in the year ahead, a great deal will be asked of you. This will be your year, your chance, your opportunity to truly achieve. It won’t always be easy. The path won’t always be smooth. And that’s why President Wilf asks each and every one of you to resolve today that this year, you will say yes to Rotary. Yes, I will turn that idea into a project, and I will lead the project to completion. Yes, I will share Rotary by bringing in new members. Yes, I will remember to put Service Above Self in everything I do. Yes, I will demonstrate my love for Rotary to those in my district and in my club by being truly present to them. President Wilf wants his presidents of 2007-08 to be known as the class that says yes.
And so, President Wilf asks all of you, this year, to share Rotary freely and fully because Rotarians have so much to share, and there is so much that the world needs from us. The opportunities for service are almost boundless. Work hard, and work with love. And remember that everything you do in service to others is part of the magic of Rotary, the magic that lets ordinary people, like you and me, do absolutely amazing things.
